The US 64 Bypass Interchange, Wendell NC

It was a big deal for Wendell when the US 64 Bypass came through and linked it directly to Raleigh, the North Carolina State Capitol. Now it is possible to get out of the house just a little later in the morning to go to work or school, or to take advantage of the shopping and cultural attractions of the city with less driving stress. This picture was taken around 2002.

Dual bridge under construction, Wendell NC

People used to endure 17 or so traffic lights on US 64 Business (then just plain old US 64) between Wendell and Raleigh! The alternatives to this commute were Poole Rd to the south (2 lane 2 way, if you get caught behind a farm tractor or a school bus on your way to work you can just go ahead and call in late) or Buffaloe Rd. to the north (same deal).

Clearing of the Right of Way

This scene of clearing comes as kind of a surprise to people who are used
to the normal trees and meadows here....

... what could have caused this devastation??

.... here is the culprit, caught still with
the evidence in its jaws!!

Roadbed Under Construction, Westbound

The picture above is a quiet view looking toward Raleigh. A year or two from the day this picture was taken, the quiet of this area was a thing of the past. It is practically impossible to even stand in this spot now with the cars zooming by.

Just before opening the road to traffic in July 2005

With our new Bypass come developers and chain stores, so now we have a Target and many other stores in Knightdale. Large subdivisions of new homes are being built which will add to the population here tremendously. Who knows what will be next!
